# Logic - The Ancient Art of Reason by Earl Fontainelle - Fruugo

There are three major methods of inference: deduction, induction, and abduction. Inductive reasoning (as opposed to deductive reasoning or abductive reasoning) is a method of reasoning in which the premises are viewed as supplying strong evidence for the truth of the conclusion. Abduction and inference to the best explanation show the inherent limits of formal logical reasoning in science. No new ideas or hypotheses in science originate by deduction or induction. In order to come up with new ideas or hypotheses and explain what happens in our world, scientists have to use inference to the best explanation. Deduction, Abduction and Induction I Peirce 1931 Kfacts [Krules j= Gresult.Deduction is an analytic process based on the application of general rules to particular facts, with the inference as a result.Abduction is synthetic reasoning which infers a fact from the rules and the result.Induction Whereas the most familiar forms are inference from a general principle or law to individual instances (deduction), or from several instances to a law (induction), abduction is an equally important constituent of scholarship, serving to identify possible explanations for a set of observations.

The engineer looked out of the window and said "Look! Scottish sheep are black!" The physicist said, "No, no. Some Scottish sheep are black." The mathematician looked irritated. Deduction is now fairly well understood, but abduction and induction have eluded a similar level of understanding. The papers collected here address the relationship between abduction and induction and their possible integration. 2017-11-29 An Explorer upon Untrodden Ground: Peirce on Abduction 119 of ampliative reasoning into Induction and Hypothesis. In fact, Peirce found in Aristotle the idea that there is a mode of reasoning which is different from both deduction and Induction.

Inductive reasoning is a method of reasoning in which the premises are viewed as supplying some evidence, but not full assurance, of the truth of the conclusion. It is also described as a method where one's experiences and observations, including what are learned from others, are synthesized to come up with a general truth. The relation between data collection and analysis and between theory and data can be discussed in terms of deduction, induction, and abduction, which is the aim of the current chapter. The method will specify how this is to be done, and what circumstances must be met for the inference to be valid.

After the presentation, I started thinking about how to present these four types of inferences or, better, epistemic activities (activities that deal in one way or another with knowing ).

Inductive reasoning, or induction, is making an inference based on an observation, often of a sample. 1.1 Deduction, induction, abduction Abduction is normally thought of as being one of three major types of inference, the other two being deduction and induction. The distinction between deduction, on the one hand, and induction and abduction, on the other hand, corresponds to the distinction between necessary and non-necessary inferences. So, abduction is guessing based on data, induction is determining likelihood based on data, and deduction is the act of determining redundant, tautological, logically certain truths.
